Synopsis: The Devil Bat wears increasingly well as a gallows comedy of scrappy pedigree. The film poses an outlandish allegory to Lugosi's own disappointments over the halt-and-go stardom he had known at the hands of the opportunistic big-league studios -- while emphasizing the droll wit that would buoy the artist throughout. Yes, and what other actor could make a cordial "Goodbye" sound so much like a death sentence?
