Margot Channing, a famous and talented actress cresting her middle years, is approached by a fawning stage-door fan, Eve, who soon goes from gushing young frump to the actress' personal assistant. When Eve ends up as Margot's understudy, some of Margot's friends—who don't trust the ambitious ingenue as far as they can, and would like to, throw her—start expressing their concerns. It's a film full of high tension and many oft-quoted lines.
