Synopsis: In una grigia cittadina nella verde campagna inglese, nella quale abita uno strano personaggio, il professor Robert Miles, che vive con un gatto nero e passa il suo tempo a registrare le voci dei morti, muoiono l'uno dopo l'altro: un giovane automobilista, nell'incendio della sua macchina; per asfissia due fidanzati, Stan e Maureen, che si erano appartati in un vagone ferroviario; un ubriacone, Ferguson, cadendo da un'impalcatura; la madre di Maureen, Lilian, nella sua casa divorata dal fuoco.
