Synopsis: One of the most popular trail areas in the United States, the Mount Whitney area draws outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and levels to enjoy its scenic views and spectacular setting in the California Sierras. However, winter climbing offers extra challenges requiring a completely different perspective and respect for the mountain.
First climbed in 1873 by John Muir, the 4.7 mile Mountaineer's Route is a less traveled trail than the very popular 11 mile Whitney Trail. Although the "MR" is shorter, its steeper slopes and unmaintained route requires adequate training and preparation. Its first winter ascent was accomplished in 1929.
