Straight Outta Puerto Rico: Reggaeton's Rough Road To Glory explores the burgeoning Reggaeton music scene from its humble beginnings in the barrios of San Juan to its emergence as an international music phenomenon. An ever changing mix of reggae, hip-hop, and Latin and Caribbean rhythms, Reggaeton began as a grassroots, DIY art form whose often gritty Spanish lyrics triggered a government backlash that included censorship, arrests of the artists and the seizure of thousands of recordings. Despite the obstacles, major stars like Daddy Yankee, Tego Calderon, Wisin y Yandel, and Dan Omar emerged, establishing Reggaeton as the most important music genre ever to claim Puerto Rico as its birthplace.
