On the night of May 29, 1914, the St. Lawrence River became the site of Canada's worst-ever marine disaster. The luxury cruise ship Empress of Ireland, with 1,477 aboard, sank after colliding with the Norwegian coal ship Storstad. The Empress was only hours into a passage to Liverpool.
After the impact, the Empress listed so sharply that lifeboats could not be launched. Recalling the tragedy, stoker William Clark, who tended the furnace, said, "The Empress rolled over like a hog in a ditch." It took only 14 minutes for the ship, owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, to vanish beneath the waves. In all, 1012 passengers and crew perished in icy waters only a few kilometres from shore.
