Mediterraneo
Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Language Film in 1992, Mediterraneo is a surprisingly sunny movie about otherwise dark world war times. It follows a group of italian soldiers on a mission to capture a hostile island under remote Greek jurisdiction. On island, however everything changes--enemies turn out to be more than aquuaintances, and invaders end up decorating the local church. Thus, in a decievingly simple manner, "Mediterraneo" puts some of the most basic, fundamental beliefs regarding war and peace, friendship and hostility. loyality and escape, to test. The film manages to leaveits audience without any burden even though it is a sort of war movie, a la "Gun for Navarone" sans Guns.
