Pelle The Conqueror
An honest tale of immigrant life, it follows a boy`s coming of age, who moves to Denmark from Seden alongwith his father. The father, a complicated mix of failure and yearning, is superbly played by Max von Sydow. For his in an incredible, shattering performance, Sydow was nominated for an Academy Award. He lost to Dustin Hoffman`s idiotic savant in Best Picture winning "Rain Man", however "Pelle the Conqueror" brought home the coveted Academy Award for Best Foreign Language. The film not only won Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, it was also bestowed upon by the prestigious Palme d`Ord at Cannes.
