Synopsis: In the town of Ainsley, Ind., troubled schoolboy Shockey lives on the wrong side of the tracks with his father, Fred Carter, a war veteran who has recently started drinking. The arrival of kindly schoolteacher Mary Evans helps lift Shockey and his father out of their hardscrabble existence. But rising tensions between townsfolk and dairy owner John Matthews threaten to derail Fred's rehabilitation.
