Sam's Army
A portrait of Sam Hughes, Canada's World War I Minister of Militia and Defence. Part one follows Hughes from Boer War days to his single-minded mobilization plan, which bypassed the existing bureaucracy but shut out French Canadians. It also reveals Canadian attitudes at the dawn of the Great War. Part two follows the Canadian Corps from their first passage overseas to their arrival in France. It outlines some of Hughes's disastrous innovations in military equipment, including the Ross Rifle (prone to jamming after repeated firing, and a combination shield/shovel, which was useless in both capacities). Part three takes us from the Canadian Corps' first victory-- at St. Julien-- to the battle of Mont Sorrel.
