Vimy Remembered - Vimy Ridge: 90th Anniversary Synopsis: On Easter Monday in 1917, Canadian soldiers, fighting for the first time in history as a united Canadian force, surprised the world by taking a strategic ridge in Vimy, France. The battle cost Canada the lives of nearly 3,600 soldiers and more than 7,000 were wounded. Immediately after the war, Canada pledged to honour those soldiers by commissioning a monument at Vimy Ridge.
