From the mind of Stan Lee, the famed creator of such beloved comic superheroes like Spider-Man, The X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, The Fantastic Four and much more, comes “Stripperella”, an incredibly funny and witty parody of a superheroine/secret agent who is a stripper by night and fights injustice and saves the world by later night. The hilarious tongue-in-cheek humor of this show pokes naughty fun at everything, from the already sex-drenched James Bond franchise ala “Austin Powers”, using many caricatures of past Bond villains and allies, to Star Trek with the episode “The Wrath of Klinko”, featuring a criminal who uses his copy machines to brainwash his customers (remember how Khan brainwashed Chekov with the worm?). Perfect examples of Bond parodies include Pushy Galore (an obvious take on Pussy Galore) who is a home shopping network queen who hawks designer goods at unbelievable discounts, an episode titled “You Only Lick Twice” and various cool spy gadgets like a laser lipstick, a belly ring that substitutes for the bat signal and even a nipple cutter that is attached to er...the nipple and will cut though anything.
The lead character, Erotica Jones (aka Stripperella), whom Stan Lee based solely on and voiced by former Baywatch babe, Pamela Anderson (complete with the barb wire tattoo around her left arm), works at an L.A. strip club called Tender Loins. Other regular characters at the club include three strippers, Gisselle (Jill Talley), who is Erotica’s best friend and has serious father issues, Persephone Cliche (Sirena Irwin) who can’t get her accents right and Catt (Joey Lauren Adams), who claims to be an Amish virgin but curses like a sailor and drinks like a fish, a gay bartender and the prudish, almost-geekish club owner, Calvin Calhoun. As a side note, we also learn in one of the episodes that Stripperella has a twin brother who is, what else but a male exotic dance/secret agent named.......Chipperella of course! Classified as Agent 69, Erotica works for the super-secretive organization and reports to the eccentric and sometime clueless Chief Stroganoff (voiced by Maurice LaMarche).
The wickedly smart and timing-perfect jokes come at you hard and fast--blink or grab some popcorn and you will most likely miss it. Some of the jokes are deceptively subtle (especially the running jokes that carry over from one episode to another) but others are just simply absurd but still highly amusing (these are gags that one might find in a Farrelly brothers movie). A perfect example of this is in the episode “You Only Lick Twice”, where you will hear the super-smart and also dim-witted Agent 14 mention that he “fingered” the whereabouts of the elusive cyber-villain Queen Clitoris, pointing to a vagina-shaped island! And where is her secret location, you might ask? Well, apparently Queen Clitoris is hiding out on “a bushy island down under that is overrun by giant crabs”! Now, you got that, right? As Stripperella would say, “Ooooh! I hate crabs!” The scenarios for many of the episodes are similarly outlandish and sometimes downright hilarious. For instance, in “Beauty and the Obese”, we have a diabolical plastic surgeon who equips rail-thin supermodels with deadly implants that makes them bloat up and subsequently explode while in “The Curse of the Werebeaver”, Stripperella must battle against a giant marauding beaver (hint! hint!).
Many animated shows nowadays are (in)famous for celebrity guest voice talents and “Stripperella” is no different. Fortunately, in this show, most of them make a lasting impression with the characters that they play. Among the famous names lending their voices to the show include Kristin Davis of “Sex and the City” fame; the always-funny Jon Lovitz as t
he cheapskate villain Cheapo; Mark Hamill as the maniacal plastic surgeon Dr. Cesarian; the Farrelly brothers, Peter and Bobby as Cheapo’s henchmen; Kid Rock (Pam Anderson’s current beau) playing himself; Tom Kenny, who’s the voice of the beloved Spongebob; comedians Kathy Griffin and Andy Dick; WWE’s Vince McMahon; and singers Chris Kirkpatrick from the boy band N’Sync and Weird Al Yankovic.
At this point in time, “Stripperella” has officially ended its abbreviated run on Spike TV. Whether it will come back in another form or on another network is still unknown. It is just too bad because there are not that many quality adult-oriented animated shows like “Stripperella” that can move beyond the shows that it parodies and still be funny at the same time.
